Me and my Dad M1EYP are hoping to go to the Lake District from the 26th July to 29th July if the weather is good. The remaining G uniques that both of us need to activate are Pillar G/LD-006, High Stile G/LD-012, Seatallan G/LD-025 and Harter Fell G/LD-028.
We are thinking of walking up Pillar from Ennerdale Youth Hostel. Does anybody know what the best route is from Ennerdale Youth Hostel to Pillar G/LD-006 that avoids Pillar Rock?
You are also welcome to suggest routes for the other remaining G SOTA summits as well.

The track up White Pike on the NW side of Pillar is probably easiest once you've crossed the river and got out of the forest!

In reply to G8ADD:
That answer was a bit short on detail. Cross the river at the bridge by Gillerthwaite Farm and then cross the beck to follow the track eastwards on the south bank of the river. A few hundred metres after passing a small tarn a track heads south on the east bank of another beck, fork left after a few hundred metres and after leaving the trees it is mostly walking on turf to the summit. Its years since I was there so for all I know the forest has been felled! If the river is low you can get across directly to the vicinity of the tarn.

Hi Brian,
I just had a look at the OS Map of this route and all the paths you mentioned are marked on the OS Map. I have also looked at the Google Map Satellite of this route and some of paths you mentioned don't seem to be on the Google Map Satellite. I am not sure if all these paths that you mentioned are still there or not. Does anybody know if these paths still exist?

In reply to 2E0EYP:
This is the problem: I clearly remember how it was in that area when I was a lot more active but it is 30 years ago now. I doubt that the track up the ridge of White Pike has gone, or the one following the river, but if at some point the forest had been felled and replanted then the tracks within the forest may have vanished or changed as replanting involves ploughing. If you have doubts you could walk up to Black Sail, go up the Pass and follow the track along the ridge line back to Pillar, avoid the right fork at Looking Stead unless you want an "interesting" way to the summit, it arrives at the Pillar Rock col via some spectacular ledges and a little scrambling! This is a nice way up but will add about two hours to the day - descend via White Pike as paths are easier to find on the descent! If I remember rightly this way up featured in one of the Wainright programs.

Hi Jimmy.
A lot of the paths shown on the map below the pillar area have been changed.
Depending upon which Youth Hostel you have in mind will make a difference in routes.
If going from Black Sail, then Black Sail Pass is probably best. If coming from Gillerthwaite, then either use the route suggested by Brian, but make sure you have a goods GPS track of where you need to be - many new "tourist" footpaths have sprung up around there and the forestry have made many changes, or take the main bridleway and then once clear of the trees follow up the route to Lingmell and then up to Steeple, Scoat Fell and across.
After all of the recent rain it is probably goign to be wet under foot up there.
A good person to chat to would be Derek (2E0MIX) as he knows this area well and has very recently been on this area of the fells.

Here's another plus for going via Youth Hostel:
YHA Ennerdale Charity Cafe is open 10 - 5 saturday and sunday.
If you are walking, cycling or visiting the Ennerdale valley, on your way to Red Pike, Pillar, Black Sail or popping over to Buttermere through Scarth Gap, why not give them a visit and stoke up on satisfying soup, fresh wholemeal bread, bacon butties, cakes, scones and flapjacks.
The carrot cake is scrumptious!
All proceeds go direct to the charity.

Hi Brian and Liz,
Thank you for the route suggestions. I am planning to activate Pillar G/LD-006 as part of a circular walk. I am hoping to start at Ennerdale Youth Hostel, walk up either Pillar G/LD-006 or High Stile G/LD-012, then walk to Black Sail Youth Hostel and stay overnight there. Next day either walk up Pillar G/LD-006 or High Stile G/LD-012 (Depending on which summit I activated the day before) and then walk back to Ennerdale Youth Hostel.
I might walk up Pillar G/LD-006 via Lingmell, Steeple and Scoat Fell. I know there is a path to Pillar G/LD-006 via Lingmell, Steeple and Scoat Fell marked on the OS Map and I think this path does exist. I might contact Derek 2E0MIX about what the best route is up Pillar G/LD-006.
Thank you also for mentioning the YHA Ennderdale Charity Cafe.

...... and you expect them to climb Pillar after that? Mind you they are the Lymm Truckstop Specialists. Some of us prefer to keep our input down to a couple of cereal bars and a bottle of cherry Lucozade. :-)

We have booked our accommodation, so game on. We have realised that we cannot buy soup up at Black Sail, and don't really want to be carrying extra 3 tins up there with us! So it looks like a first experiment with packet/powder soup for the EYPs, as that is what will be carried as ingredients for preparing the following day's lunch. Full breakfasts and evening meals are available at the hostels, and have been booked and paid for.
It looks like the final summit in G for us both will be Harter Fell next Sunday. We will aim for a long time window for activating that one, so as to record as many chasers as possible in our logs as we complete the association.

Fortunately they do have a good selection of bottled ales :)
Hope you all have as good a time there as Gerald and I did, quite a unique experience!
Good luck with your expedition

Dear Tom and Jimmy,
Just looked at your postings for the up and coming activations, but there is no mention of 2m FM. I take it your going to be using that mode as well. The family is looking forward to working you during this special occasion.
Well done in anticipation.
Kind Regards
Brian

Morning Brian,
I trust the family is well. I very much enjoyed your recent article in PW.
I have no intention of doing 2m FM from these summits ;)

Hey, Brian, you must know that since Tom went dotty his PTT finger muscles have wasted away! Jimmy may well operate FM but that won't penetrate as far as here in Brummagen...

There is a nursery rhyme incompletely recollected from the deep recesses in my memory :
"NNNNN would eat no fat, his wife would eat no lean. So between the pair of them, they kept the plates quite clean"

My callsign is 2E0EYP, not 2E1EYP and it will do 2m FM from the remaining G uniques.

A bit of SSB might get you over the SP "hump" and into the Midlands! Good luck, anyway.
