It's up-to-date!

New pages added today for:

Gun SP-013, Cold Fell NP-020, Burnhope Seat NP-003, Nine Standards Rigg NP-018, Old Man of Coniston LD-013, Snowdon NW-001, Walton Hill CE-002, Bredon Hill CE-003, Cleeve Hill CE-001, Wendover Woods CE-005 and Bardon Hill CE-004.

Even the page for The Cloud SP-015 is up-to-date with each of this year's many activations recorded (the page is rather long, but I haven't put many photos on so it won't clog up any computers!).

We have activating plans for summits in the G/SE and the G/LD regions over the summer, so hopefully the website will be soon out-of-date once again!

Please visit http://tomread.co.uk - and sign the guestbook to let me know if it is of any use and/or interest.

The ON father-and-son activators have reminded me that I also have a new video on YouTube. It is nothing special, just Jimmy M3EYP descending the ridge off Cadair Berwyn. Nothing amazing about the "action", but the surroundings are absolutely beautiful. The link is on the Cadair Berwyn page in my website http://tomread.co.uk

Now to put links to my newly published summit pages onto SOTAwatch - in the summit info pages. (I love using these SW2 pages for information and tips while planning a trip - does anyone use them for planning?).

The wx for the NW-056 was stunning, so we got some great photos for that page.

It was never that bad for me - they all loaded up pretty quickly, both on the home and work PCs, and that included newly updated pages, so not the case that a local cache was being recalled. However, you were not the only one who expressed losing the will to live while waiting for my webpages, so I decided to do something about it!

But the new host - recommended by MW0IDX and GM4ZFZ - is much better, and my big long pages with loads of photos load instantly now on my PCs.

I hope to have a new batch of uniques summit pages to add on there in a week or so, after my sortie down south. I hope the forecast heavy rains don't make it a complete wash-out!

You had me worried there Andy about exactly what sort of site my brother was forwarding to now. Alas, it's just a domain-parking page. I'll find out where he is now on the www and update it!

Anyway, you're SUPPOSED to be looking at my SE/SC activations...;)

In the meantime, updates continue apace. Jimmy has started proof-reading the new pages from our SE/SC tour, and is reporting errors to me every two minutes. Like the fact that we had breakfast at Warwick Services, not Oxford Services, and that my first photo on Black Down G/SE-003 was of the NT donation box, not a trig point etc etc.

It's going to be a long night...

Another batch of updates completed, and linked from the summit information pages here on SOTAwatch. The new or updated ones are:

Carneddol GW/NW-068
Garn Boduan GW/NW-066
Carn Fadryn GW/NW-058
Mynydd Rhiw GW/NW-064
Yr Eifl GW/NW-075
Gyrn Ddu GW/NW-050
The Cloud G/SP-015
Gun G/SP-013
Shining Tor G/SP-004
Easington Fell G/SP-012
Moel Famau GW/NW-044

Hail Storm Hill G/SP-009
Kisdon G/NP-026
Yarlside G/NP-019
The Calf G/NP-013
Rogan's Seat G/NP-014

The photos from the NPs at the bottom of the list have come out particularly well and worth a look - just superb photo-taking wx conditions. The silly hats/cream tea/cheese & wine on Easington Fell have to be seen to be believed. The Moel Famau/Foel Fenlli pair were done with the Norwegian trio of Kjell LA1KHA, Mads LA1TPA and Aage LA1ENA, so you can see the meet up on those pages. The bottom of the Gun page has all the photos and details from the CQWW SSB dabble by M0GIA, M3EYP and myself.

Please take a look at http://tomread.co.uk and feel free to leave any feedback in the guestbook - or on here.

Cheers, Tom M1EYP and Jimmy M3EYP (who has done quite a lot of editing and photo formatting for this set of updates).

New webpages are now on http://tomread.co.uk for:

GW/NW-011 Arenig Fawr
GW/NW-018 Moel Llyfnant
GW/NW-064 Mynydd Rhiw
GW/NW-072 Mynydd Enlli

There are some nice photos on the NW-011 and NW-018 pages as it was such a lovely day weather wise. Of these four, only the NW-018 page shows up on the 'Recent Summit Info' link on here, as the other three pages already existed from previous years' activations.

The NW-072 has a good set of photos from Bardsey Island. It was really nice to visit that place again. There are also new photos on the ever-updating SP-015 page, featuring Gerald G4OIG's debut on the summit.

The site has now got reports, information and photos for all of my 874 SOTA activations to date (plus all 321 of Jimmy's), covering 227 unique summits, all in the UK. There is a link from each of the applicable 227 summit information pages on SOTAwatch as well.

I recently read a great line on Steve GW7AAV's website:

Up-to-date again, at last.

Not much in the way of new uniques this time, but the new pages on for the expeditions to Black Hill, Kinder Scout, Shining Tor, Gun, The Cloud, Bishop Wilton Wold and Kisdon certainly capture much of our snowy winter.

Seems I didn't advise of my previous update. But ISW - Gun G/SP-013 - is on the site now, complete with photos og the carnage that greeted us on the Sunday morning after braving the storm huddled in our tents.

Also on there are the photos and reports from the "Derrick Bird Days" - five activations in the Lakes - Holme Fell G/LD-051, Lingmoor Fell G/LD-040, Gummer's How G/LD-050, Pike of Blisco G/LD-024 and Muncaster Fell G/LD-055.

The first three Backpackers Contest sessions are on the site, with activations of Foel Fenlli GW/NW-051, Moel Famau GW/NW-044, Kinder Scout G/SP-001, Great Orme GW/NW-070 and Tal y Fan GW/NW-040.

The other new page added is the July activation of Bardon Hill G/CE-004.

See all at http://tomread.co.uk

Furthermore, did I ever mention the new SOTA accessory I have designed? It is a headset mini SOTA Beam. It does make you look like a Teletubby, but for truly portable SOTA, surely it is the future?

See me modelling the kit here:

Lots more new summit pages and photos will be added shortly.

No takers for the mini-SOTA-beam-head-mount?

More updates on the site now. Only The Cloud SP-015, Gun SP-013 and Hutton Roof Crags LD-052, but perhaps of more interest will be the school outing back in July (on the SP-015 page) and the activations of 5 licensed students from my school.

In reply to M1EYP:

Excellent report! Good to see some youngsters enjoying the hobby.

At first I thought there was something odd about the photos, then it clicked, they are all holding the mic in their right hands. I think most people hold it in their left so they can write notes or the log with their right.

btw - the two video links at the bottom of the page seem broken (maybe the files are still uploading).

Great spot Colin! Of course, being an understanding and kindly teacher (ha ha), I did all the logging for them. Last year I prepared all the students with a personalised log sheets, but they still found doing their own logging while operating portable for the first time to be too much! So this year I had a rethink - which resulted in a much more successful activity.

Yes, I am struggling to successfully embed the video files in such a way as they playback from the website. Any knowhow (I am using Frontpage) appreciated, otherwise I may simply "cheat" and link to them on YouTube instead!

In reply to M1EYP:

Frontpage! Ugh! That's akin to a maths teacher using a calculator to add up simple numbers!

Playing them directly from the website probably needs the server to have some permissions etc set. You might also need a playlist link (akin to the m3u files needed to play mp3 files on some servers. You can embed the Youtube applet quite easily which might be the simplest way to go, especially if your server has limited or expensive bandwidth.

Yes, going the YT way!

I like Frontpage. I understand (most of) it.

Somewhat analagously, I learned to program in BASIC when I was 12 (1982). I got moderately good at it and made my own versions of those "Football Manager" games that were popular at the time, and could even do a bit of simple machine code for "Space Invader" type games. One crass bit of programming I did was a stupid little routine for an audio effect called a "motor laser" - which basically rapidly turned the cassette controller motor on and off repeatedly while the "laser" (the space bar) was being pressed. This had the effect of a vibrating purr on the BBC B computers, but on Acorn Electrons it was the most appalling noise that sounded like the keyboard was about to smash!

Anyway, less of the waffle, what about the analogy? Well, in 1984-1986 at school (O Level Computer Studies) our teachers told us BASIC was rubbish and wouldn't have any application on our adult lives. At University 1989-92, our lecturers told us the same thing, and taught us some other weird languages (I had to do a computing module in the first year of my maths degree).

And now? What is the programming I do in my professional job? Visual Basic, in order to create interactive whiteboard learning resources for maths! All those people who told me that BASIC would be of no use in 25 years - hang your heads in shame!

I'll keep faith with Frontpage for the same reason ;)

(BTW, yes, I do use calculators to add up simple numbers - I can only do calculus without a calculator).

In reply to G8ADD:
I had a barrel slide rule - an Otis-King if I remember. Always had problems subtracting bar numbers in logs - used to do a longhand approximation and fudge the figures to match. Only a problem if out maths teacher (Mr Dyne) caught me. Ah, happy days

What's a slide rule?

Video content on the Cloud page on my site is now all working - but you might want to crank the volume up!

Next you should introduce them to contesting ;) Get a "Cloud" contest group going in the summer for Tuesday evenings.

I am the Cloud Contest Group! No, steady on, I've finished work by that time on a Tuesday evening. It's "me time" by that part of the evening!

Now added Days 1 & 2 of the DC-SC camping tour from July/August. Just one new summit page (so far) - Hensbarrow Beacon G/DC-004. But worth a look nonetheless - the photos clearly show the landfill towering above the "summit" in several directions. By how much I'm not sure, but as it's man-made, it doesn't matter.

http://tomread.co.uk

Maybe there will come a time when RHB consider the landfill to be sufficiently vegetated and grassed over to be part of the topology and move the summit position accordingly. Until then, it's the trig point, but the VHF take-off is pretty well hideous - arguably as bad as Kisdon G/NP-026.

Thank goodness for HF and the ionosphere.

More stuff on http://tomread.co.uk

Day 2 of the DC-SC tour is now complete with Carnmenellis G/DC-006 and Watch Croft G/DC-007 added.

Days 3 to 10 are also online. This includes Brown Willy G/DC-002, Kit Hill G/DC-003, High Willhays G/DC-001, Christ Cross G/DC-005, Selworthy Beacon G/SC-005, Beacon Batch G/SC-003, Win Green G/SC-008, Long Knoll G/SC-007, Lewesdon Hill G/SC-009, Hardown Hill G/SC-011, Staple Hill G/SC-004 and Periton Hill G/SC-006.

There is a good selection of photos on the pages, enhanced by the fact that there were three of us regularly taking photos thoughout the holiday.

My highlights on the pages are the photos on DC-001 and DC-002. The High Willhays page also includes a set of photos taken by Jimmy M3EYP and Craig on Yes Tor which they visited while I was activating. Jimmy found the elusive trig point on Christ Cross, and the Long Knoll page contains a "proof positive" video of Liam walking relatively briskly up a steep hill!

The structure should work so that you can start on the first page of the DC-SC tour - Hensbarrow Beacon G/DC-004 - and then move from day to day by clicking the appropriate link near the end of the narrative.

The remaining 6 SOTA activation pages of the DC-SC tour will be added shortly.

More in the coming days. I've only got 18 more activations, 112 remaining photos and 676 activator QSOs to place on the website... Then I'll post all the links on the SOTAwatch Summit info resource pages.

(We did the three CEs on the way home from the DC-SC mission).

It is one of those very rare moments when my website is completely up-to-date (as far as SOTA is concerned). It will spare me a bit of nagging from J & L anyway!

http://tomread.co.uk

Pages added/updated are:

Carnedd y Filiast GW/NW-032
Longridge Fell G/SP-014
Moel Gyw GW/NW-053
The Cloud G/SP-013
Moel y Gamelin GW/NW-042
Gun G/SP-013
Cyrn-y-Brain GW/NW-043
Shining Tor G/SP-004
Kinder Scout G/SP-001
Cringle Moor-Drake Howe G/TW-002
Lambrigg Fell G/LD-046
Bishop Wilton Wold G/TW-004

...plus the Coast 2 Coast Road Trip story, as mentioned.

Hope some folks enjoy the pictures. No doubt my website will be hopelessly out-of-date again before too long! Or as GW7AAV says "If your website is finished, then your life is over..."!

...and a load of Gun and Cloud stuff, of course ;)

All on http://tomread.co.uk

Now added Black Hill G/SP-002 and Billinge Hill G/SP-017, plus of course the perpetual updating (not yet complete) of Gun G/SP-013 and The Cloud G/SP-015.

The Billinge Hill page also includes the report and photos from the SOTA 10th Birthday celebrations at the Norbreck Rally - so another chance (or a first chance if you weren't there) to see Audrey's amazing SOTA 10th Birthday Cake!

It's all here: http://tomread.co.uk

Please sign the guestbook - and that includes you even if you've signed it in the past. Lycos has suddenly discontinued its HTML Gear services, including the guestbook I used. In reply to M1EYP:

OT: you can ignore if you wish.

>stating that it cannot be retrieved

Thus we see the problems of trusting anything to ***the cloud***. No not Bosley Cloud SP-015 but this mythical computing nonsense that every Snake Oil salesman is pushing now. If your data isn't backed up onto something physical you have in your posession (hard discs, QIC, DLC, 9-track, DVD, CD or even punched card) then you don't own your data. If you don't own your data you can't complain when someone else takes away your access.

Those of us who are long in the tooth in this computing lark know that only too well. But there's lots of noobs and young impressionable people out there who don't understand that and believe their data is safe in the cloud.

Andy's data safety maxim #1:

Your data is only safe in the cloud as long as somebody can mine that data for profit. Once there's no profit they have no reason to offer you free storage etc.

Sorry for the brief thread theft Tom.
